Unclaimed Jewelry goes to Ebay

Did you know that all unclaimed items in your bank’s safe goes to the state after a period of time? Then the state would take these items and auction it off on Ebay. This is news to me.

Monday, December 7th, the state of Wisconsin will be listing items from unclaimed property on ebay. These items includes several diamond engagement rings, a men’s 1.75 carat diamond ring, class ring from the 1960’s, pocket watches and women’s wrist watches, handmade jewelry from France and others.

Each year, the state treasury department receives unclaimed safe deposit items from banks and financial institutions. Before the items go to the state, it must be abandoned for at least five years. During these five years, the names of the owner are published in local newspaper and entered into an online database. However the money for these items does not go to the state, all the value of these items is held for the heirs to collect. Source

So, if you’re into antique jewelry, check out the ebay auction, but if you like new and cutting edge jewelry, come check out our selection of fashion rings.

  1. Hi!
    Thanks for the blog mention.
Just wanted to let you know that not all states sell off the safety deposit box items or use eBay to sell them.
We do because we don’t have enough room in the vault to hold items in perpetuity.

But, the most important thing you mentioned is that the State of Wisconsin, as well as every other state, does not take the proceeds and put them into the general fund.
All the money from the auction is held for the rightful owner to claim it.

    Thank You!

    Ron,

Thank you for clarifying this as I was questioning if all states do the same.
